This traditional fish pie recipe is filling and nutritious. Its perfect served with green beans or garden peas. A guaranteed hit with the whole family! This classic fish pie will take around 1hr and 20 mins to make and cook and is well worth the wait. This family-sized fish pie serves 6 people. Our favourite part of this potato topped fish pie is the creamy, rich pie sauce. White fish fillet and smoked haddock fish make a delicious combination in this pie. This fish pie is one of our top-rated recipes - our user Jay says; 'it's excellent and has made it several times'. What do you think? Did you add something to our fish pie recipe to make it extra special? We always want to hear your twists on our dishes so leave us a comment to let us know how you made this recipe work for your family.

Ingredients

  • 1.8kg (4lb) cubed potatoes
  • 75g (3oz) low fat spread
  • 50g (2oz) plain flour
  • 575ml (1pt) semi-skimmed milk
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 6 black peppercorns
  • ½ small onion
  • 450g (1lb) white fish fillet
  • 225g (8oz) smoked haddock

Method

  1. Put the potatoes in a pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil and simmer for 15 mins. Drain and mash with 25g (1oz) of the low fat spread.
  2. Put the milk in a large pan with the bay leaf, peppercorns and onion. Slowly bring to the boil and remove from heat. Remove and discard bay leaf, peppercorns and onion.
  3. Put 50g (2oz) low fat spread in a large pan and heat gently until melted. Add 50g (2oz) plain flour and cook gently for 1 to 2 mins, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat and gradually whisk in reserved milk. Return to the heat and bring to the boil, whisking constantly until thickened.
  4. Put the fish, skinned and cut into large chunks, in the base of an oven-proof dish, pour over the sauce and spoon the mashed potato over the top. Bake in a preheated oven at 190°C (375ºF, gas mark 5) for 25 mins until potato is golden. Serve the fish pie immediately.
Wine match: This dish has great texture and a strong, smoked fish flavour which needs a broader style of wine like Gallo Family Vineyards Chardonnay. The oak in the wine makes it taste slightly smoky which will sit nicely your palate. Food and wine matching by Sylvain Removille, wine ambassador for Gallo Family Vineyards.
